Easy Tips to Connect with Your Audience

Podiums and Lecterns Now Customizable! Next Generation and Patent Pending.

When you have mastered your material, you have hit a sweet spot. If an established speaker already has a general idea what they are going to say, they can focus on making their speech the best fit for each specific audience.

Carefully considering details about your speech and adapting it to each audience will not only help you engage your audience but will keep you from sounding too rehearsed and running through your speech on autopilot.

Location

Besides knowing where you will be speaking, ask if most of your audience will be residents or guests to that area. For example, if you and your audience are both visiting a locale, you can use this information to establish a sense of camaraderie.

Occasion

Sometimes the occasion you've been asked to speak at will tell you a lot about the kind of speech you are expected to give. A speech at a formal benefit dinner will be different than a spaghetti supper.

Size and Setting

Most event coordinators should give you at least an estimate of how many people you will be speaking to and where. If you can't take a look at the setting beforehand don't forget to ask questions like, what is the distance between where you will be speaking and the rows of seating. Will you be in a setting where you'll need sound equipment? If you're speaking in a smaller setting, try to tailor your speech so that it's more personal. If you're speaking to a larger audience, try to choose expressions and illustrations that will have a broad appeal.

“There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself, and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience.”
- Alexander Gregg
